Kalami Review by Lynda Bolton and Anne Drake
"My childhood in Corfu shaped my life. If I had the craft of Merlin, I would give every child the gift of my childhood." ~Gerald Durrell

From Lynda...
We first visited Kalami 13 years ago. We had decided that
we wanted a change from France, so we got loads of
brochures to get some ideas, and after much deliberation,
we decided on Corfu. We made a list of possibilities and
trotted to our trusty travel agent. They ran all our possibilities
through the computer, only to be told, Sorry, cant do that date, Sorry cant do that flight, Sorry that accommodation isnt available when you want it ..........
until they got to Kalami. Stratigos apartments, to be
precise. Miracle of Miracles, it was available on the
dates we wanted! So we said - OK OK OK OK we give up -
we will go there! So - we paid our money and looked forward
to our trip.

We had absolutely no idea at all of what to expect, but we
knew that the place was pretty quiet. I just hoped that our t
wo kids would be happy there!

We arrived at around 3am and were led down a very tricky path to our accommodation. Now I know that the brochure said "on the beach" but we didnt really think that it would be SOOO close to the beach! Stratigor was everything we wanted, and more - we absolutely fell in love with the place on sight, but I have to admit that I was worried that the kids might find it too quiet for them. They were, at that time, 15 and 12, but we neednt have worried. They, like us, loved it from the start. We never saw them for the full two weeks we were there, which is a sure sign they are enjoying themselves!

Kalami isnt a hotbed of entertainment and nightclubs. There are only a handful of bars, a couple of shops, and a few tavernas. But the scenery is absolutely drop dead gorgeous, the locals are so friendly and hospitable, and the food in the tavernas is absolutely top class. Dimitris taverna is on the top road, ring from the phone box in the village and Dimitri will send a car down to pick you up and take you home after your meal - hows that for service? The food in there is fantastic, but be sure to visit before night falls, because the views are simply fantastic. There are also three tavernas in Kalami itself, all on the beach, and there are also three tavernas in Agni Bay which are all easily accessible, either by boat or (for the more energetic!) on foot. Our favourite, by far, is Nikolas Taverna in Agni Bay. Fantastic value for money, and the atmosphere there is just brilliant. Its a family run taverna, and the proprietor, Periclis, also has some apartments for rent both in Agni and Kalami itself. We always stay in one of these apartments, which are very reasonably priced, in a fantastic location and spotlessly clean.

From Anne...
Whilst staying in gorgeous Kalami, you may consider getting out and about.

May I suggest the trips the three of us did this June (the three of us being Mr Dripps , our eleven-year-old son, and myself).

Trip to Corfu Town, at night by coach; pick-up in the lobby outside the A &A, 5pm; returning at approximately 10:30pm by coach. You are free to explore this wonderful town; there is a fantastic atmosphere and the town really comes alive at night.

Boat trip to Vidos (also Mouse Island): pick up at Koloura at approximately 10am, returning at approximately 3pm. Vindos is a wonderful place, with underground tunnels leading from Corfu Town. It is now a bird sanctury, (be sure to say " Hello" to my mate Jill, the English lady, who runs the Taverna and bar there!). Lunch and alcoholic drinks are included on this trip and it also anchors up for a swim for those who are brave enough!

Coach trip to Paleokastritsa, leaving on a Sunday morning at 9 am outside A&A. Trip to Monestry and Kumkat distillary included. Return approx 5pm .

Aqualand... We booked , but sadly didnt get there, much to our young son's disappointment as there was a nasty storm.

All trips Booked locally, next to the A&A supermarket.
