"Welcome aboard the Madalena" says Captain Spiros to his passengers. "Our first destination tonight is Mouse Island. Do you know why it is called Mouse Island? Because one million mouses live there - nobody else!"
The passengers chuckle as they find their seats aboard the medium-size cruising boat.
Captain Spiros continues his banter: "Do you know one Greek name?" he asks. "Tell me!"
"Spiros," says one of the passengers.
"That' right!" says the skipper. "My name is Spiros." Then he points inside the wheel house at the pilot. "His name also Spiros," he says. "On Corfu, everybody is named Spiros!"
Which of course is hardly an exaggeration.
Once all the passengers are seated on the comfortable deck seats, the engine is started and the Madalena pulls away from the dock located between Gouvia Marina and Gouvia Village. A moment later, it is chugging toward Lazzaretto Island, with the northern isthmus of the islad as a backdrop.
The route this evening takes the passengers on a sunset cruise from Gouvia Marina to Corfu Town. Crossing Gouvia Bay, the New Port and the Old Port of Corfu are visible, with Mount Pantocrator looming in the northwest as a backdrop. The Madalena sails past two huge cruise ships docked in the harbor before rounding the peninnsula on which Corfu Town is located. Sailing along the coastline, the oldest buildings in Corfu Town come into sight. On the eastern side of the penninsula, Madalena motors toward Mouse Island.
On the return trip to gouvia Marina, Madalena docks in Corfu Town for about two hours, giving passengers a chance to disembark, stroll around town, shop, have a drink at a cafe, or a meal in one of the many Corfu Town tavernas. Finally, the Madalena sails back to the harbour at Gouvia Marina, returning passengers at around eleven o'clock.
HHCM highly recommends Captain Spiros's 'Corfu by Night' cruise, as well as the other cruises, including a day-long trip to the north of the island for a beachfront barbeque.
