From Our Readers...

"I have just read your magazine via a link on the Corfu Travel Guide.  I thought the article on declining tourism in Corfu very interesting.  I've read a lot of opinions regarding the decline and although we are only fairly recent visitors to Corfu this article makes a lot of sense.  We always stay in the NE area and go to Kalami, Avlaki and Ag. Steph (NE).  These areas don't seem to be effected (sic) as much by declining numbers (or as far as I can tell anyway).

We always stay in a villa so difficult to judge about the quality of hotels/apartments etc but it was something I had thought about - a lot of holiday destinations are known to have upgraded their image (i.e. areas of Spain, Majorca, Canaries etc) and a lot of up and coming new resorts have used the tourist experiences of other countries to ensure that they 'get it right'.  It seems to me that perhaps Corfu has relied a bit too much on its charm and allowed some areas (Sidari for example) to become rather tacky.

On a positive note  I also found the restaurant information very useful and we will be going to Panorama for lunch."

Corfu For Sale:
At a Bargain Price
Commentary
In the last issue I wrote about Corfu's declining tourist industry. In that commentary I sited many reasons for the precipitous decline, not the least of which is an ever widening quality gap that exists between Greece in general ( and Corfu specifically) and other resorts in the Mediterreanean region and elsewhere.

But there is another side of this dilemma - one that is perhaps less visible to visitors, but one that is more profound in terms of the island's future.

Having lived on Corfu for five years continuously, and as the publisher of over one hundred web sites, as well as this magazine and directory, it becomes more and more obvious to me that Corfu is for sale - at a bargain price!

To better understand the evolution (or perhaps the redistribution) of Corfu's population, let's look at a little recent history.

In 1970, tourism came to Greece in earnest, and Corfu embraced the influx of visitors like no other island in Greece. At the time, however, Corfu was a cash-poor economy: all its wealth was in property, as families had acquired land for decades (and in some circumstances centuries) and passed it down from parents and grandparents to children and grandchildren. There are still plenty of Greek Corfiots around who will tell you about the old days - the days when there was no money, but money didn't really matter because the local economy was largely agrarian, and the people wanted for few of the essentials of life. Tourism from northern Europe brought easy money to the island, the likes of which the Corfiots had never before seen. And, enterprising as they were, they took full advantage of the situation, building hotels and restaurants and virtually anything else they perceived the tourists might want or require. For twenty-five years the money flowed into Corfu each summer, and some of the Corfiots became wealthy beyond their wildest dreams as a result. But what fortuitous situation goes on forever? Certainly not Corfu's ever-increasing tourist trade.

With sadness and sympathy we must report that on 20 May 2006, Mike Jackson (also known as 'Mick the Ditch') died at his home in Kontokali from heart attack. Mike was 58.

A popular figure among the British ex-pats, Mike will be missed. HHCM extends sympathies to his family and friends.
