The fanfare rises - Drum roll, please! Excitement ripples through the overflow crowd that has gathered tonight at Irish Knights Pub in Gouvia to see 'The King' perform his greatest hits.

A moment later Oresti Kovi, Corfu's Elvis impersonator extrordinaire, takes the stage in full costume and breaks into his first number, You Ain't Nothin' But A Hound Dog.

He shakes, he grunts and groans, he wiggles his pelvis and mimics Presley's gestures to perfection, but most of all, he sings! Oresti Kovi honors Presley's unforgettable style in each song he sings with skill and grace. Why? Simply because he has loved the music since childhood, and because he enjoys bringing it to his audience, young or old!

Night after night, Oresti is a real clrowd pleaser. Often his one-hour performances are given to standing-room-only audiences. Whether he is performing in Gouvia, or Sidari, or Ipsos, or Dassia, it is likely to be the same: people standing out in the street waiting to get in to see 'The King' sing Are You Lonesome Tonight or Suspicious Minds.

But it has not been an easy road to popularity for this would-be King of Rock 'n Roll. Coming to Corfu fifteen years ago from Albania, Oresti did not arrive by boat; he swam the straight between Saranda and Corfu with four other young men. Of the five who started out that night, only three survived the icy water, as two of his mates drownd. For Oresti, freedom came at a high price indeed! He made the most of his opportunity though, working several summers waiting tables, then returning home to Albania during the winter months.

These days life is better for Oresti as he practices his well-honed craft six nights a week all during the summer season.

"The most important thing is the people," he says. "They really like to see Elvis, and I try to give them a good show every night."

Besides rendering 20 songs per show to authentic back-up tracks, Oresti always engages his audience, posing for a snapshot, singing a request, or chatting about Elvis trivia with other Elvis fans.

The three different costumes he wears are painstakingly recreated from photos of Elvis performing. "The costumes are sewn by an English woman living on Corfu," he says. "The boots come from a company in America that specializes in Elvis costumes." Various Corfu artisans have made other accoutrements for the costumes to Oresti's exacting specifications.

Typically, Oresti Kovi performs Tuesday through Sunday in Gouvia, Dassia, Ipsos, and Sidari. So, on your next rip to Corfu don't forget to 'catch the King'. It will be a night you will not soon forget!
