A Sad Goodbye...

It is sad to report that two of our favourite establishments ceased doing business at the close of the 2005 tourist season.

Dionysos Taverna in Dassia, which was owned and operated by the Tryfonas family for 30 years, closed its doors at the end of the 2005 season. During its long history, Taverna Dionysos not only served excellent meals and drinks to visitors each summer, but also hosted many weddings, christenings and other events for the local population of Corfu during the winter months. The building, a landmark in Dassia, has been leased by Sconto Markets, so visitors to Dassia next summer will find an Italian discount supermarket where Taverna Dionysos once stood. The editors of Happy Holidays Corfu and its readers, as well as the many patrons and friends who have visited the establishment over the years, will miss Taverna Dionysos in 2006, and we wish to extnd our thanks and best wishes to the Tryfonas family.

Also closing in September 2005 was Harbour Lights Cafe owned by Jacquie and Trevor Gallagher. In business for only one year, Harbour Lights became a favorite site for visitors to the Happy Holidays Corfu Directory. Those who visited Harbour lights during 2005 found a warm welcome in picturesque surroundings; nevertheless, the Gallaghers decided to call it quits after the 2005 summer. Both Jacquie and Trevor would like to thank the many friends and patrons who visited the cafe this summer, and they say that owning a cafe/bar on Corfu is an experience they will never forget. A sad goodbye to Harbour Lights, and best of luck to the Gallaghers!

Congratulations Jack Lowe, who turned 75 recently and celebrated his birthday with friends at the Drop Inn in Ipsos.

Where Have All The Tourists Gone?
Commentary

It is April, almost Easter, and Corfu is beginning to come out of its long Winter slumber. Everywhere one looks, especially in the resort villages, business owners are painting and plastering, washing windows, sweeping walkways. Ever since the New Year the island has been in a state of hybernation, but the warm weather (or at least the promise of it) has arrived, and hope is renewed. Another season will soon begin, bringing some 2 million visitors to Corfu over the course of the summer. But, as everyone here on the island laments, tourism is not nearly what it used to be. When asked why it is so, most business owners only shake their heads or shrug their shoulders. To them, the recent exodus of tourists is a mystery. But to my eye (a foreigner who has been coming to Corfu since 1992 and who now makes the island his permanent home) it is not a mystery at all.

Corfu's tourist industry began in earnest in the seventies when thousands of independent travelers discovered the island's beauty and charm. At that time there was little development, land the local Greek population vigorously embraced the opportunity for what was then an easy inflow of cash - something they had not seen in the past. Who could blame them for opening tavernas to feed these xeni, or for building an annex onto their home to rent out rooms. For nearly two decades the visitors continued to arrive, each summer bringing more than the last. Corfu's economy grew, and its infrastructure improved. Many of the local people thrived in a way they had previously never known. It all seemed to good to be true, and what's more, it seemed as though it would continue forever. Then, during th nineties, tourism began to decline, slowly at first, them more profoundly in recent years. Suddenly, the island's tourist infrastructure seems radically overbuilt, and many of the local business people are in dire straights as a result of the decline. Still, as stated earlier, 2 million visitors touch soil here each summer, and that is not an insignificant number by any measure.
