Boatman's Holiday: A Look at Corfu's Annual End-of-season Regatta
The morning of October 29, 2005 dawned clear and promised warm temperatures with a light breeze; and under blue skies, several hundred participants in Corfu's yearly end-of-season sailing event prepared for the afternoon race over a course laid out across Gouvia Bay. Launch time was scheduled for 13:30, but before the race many of the sailors enjoyed a relaxed breakfast at the Maestro Cafe in Gouvia Marina before preparing their sailing yachts for the race.
The annual sailing event was open to all types of sailing yachts, and a YMS Challenge Trophy, as well as many other prizes, were up for grabs to winners of various classes and positions.
As far as the race itself is concerned, some of the following rules applied:
Only working sails to be used; no spinnakers or cruising chutes
Anyone engaging in bombardment of a boat flying a black bag on the backstay is disqualified
Long Course: Vido Island to be left to starboard; short course: Navsika Island (Punk Rock) to be left to starboard.
The finish line is between the Committee boat and the outer red buoy at the entrance of the marina.
The race will end at 17:00 hours
All competition aside, this end-of-season sailing spectacular is
mostly for fun. In fact, a note on the Regatta entry form states: "In the past the odd missile has been thrown, so if you DO NOT wish to be the recipient of such missiles, please fly a black bag from the backstay!"
Once all warning horns were sounded, and the boats were all aligned, a fifteen-second blast was sounded, all flags were lowered, all engines silenced, and the contestants were off to complete the course. The result, for spectators, was a stunningly beautiful spray of white sails against a blue backdrop of sea and sky.
Following the finish of the race, a celebratory dinner was held at the Argo Restaurant in Gouvia Marina. The Strangeloves provided the music, and various prizes were given to the winners in various categories.
*The annual Corfu Regatta takes place each year on the final Saturday of October, which also marks the official end of the summer tourist season.
Lost In The Translation???
The following text is taken verbatum from a brochure distributed by AirSea Lines, a company offering tourist flights over Corfu originating from Gouvia Marina.
Those of us living on Corfu who are native English speakers are certainly accustomed to coming upon the 'odd' translation (such as the restaurant sign advertising "Lamp on Spit" ), and whether the following text is a translation from Greek or some other language, we do not presume to know for certain; nevertheless, (and meaning no disrespect to AitSea Lines, to the writer or to the translator), we did find the English copy in the brochure to be quite funny, and decided to share it with you, our readers.
