Afionas -A Little Known and Unspoilt Paradise on Corfu's Northwest Coast
Afionas Village is located on the Northwest coast of the island of Corfu, above the village of Agios Georgios, a sprawling resort set at the mouth of a wide, wooded valley with a long, gently sloping beach that is considered by many to be the best on Corfu.
Perched high upon verdant hills, Afionas offers spectacular views of Agios Georgios Bay to the south and the islands of Kravia, Sikia and Gineka, and further on the Diapontia Islands of Mathraki, Othoni and Erikousa in the Ionian Sea to the north.
First inhabited during the 6the century, the village of Afionas is small, quiet and peaceful. In the centre of the village stands the old church in a quiet square from which several narrow streets fork off to the old village.
Close by is Porto Timoni, the ruins of a fortress built in 300 BC by Pirros, King of Epirus, and Akri Arilla (Point Arilla), where excavations have uncovered a village dating back to Neolithic times. The 13th century Venetian fortress of Angelkastro is a 30 minute car ride away.
